Placement puzzles

Put a fixed number of objects into the grid so that every row, column and region gets its share and nothing touches. Star Battle asks for stars that never meet, even diagonally; Tents and Trees, coming soon, pitches a tent beside every tree. The clues are counts, and the deductions come from counting too.

What makes a placement puzzle

In a placement puzzle you decide where a set of identical objects goes. Star Battle gives you an N×N grid cut into N regions and asks for one star (or two, on the 10×10) in every row, every column and every region, with no two stars adjacent. Tents and Trees will follow the same pattern with tents that must sit next to their tree and never touch each other.

The key habit is marking where an object cannot go. Every star you place rules out the eight cells around it and the rest of its row, column and region; crossing those cells out quickly exposes the only place the next star can be. Start with a 6×6 Star Battle and move to the two-star 10×10 once the region counting feels natural.

FAQ

The same number as each row and column: one star on the 6×6 and 8×8 grids, two stars on the 10×10. The counter above the grid shows how many stars the whole grid needs.
